He said gambling in casinos didn’t have a lot of risk as there are many laws to control the practice but online gambling has a lot of risks associated with it and residents of Ontario should be given the chance through voting to decide whether they wanted to engage in that kind of internet gambling or not.
CAW which is headed by Lewenza has 7000 employees working for gambling firms with about 1000 of them working for the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. (OLG. He said there should be a temporary halt on internet betting websites that is controlled by the government until more research is done and Ontario residents consulted to find out their views on the matter.
Dwight Duncan, Finance Minister of Ontario said that the province’s government will be creating online gambling websites in the early part of 2012 to satisfy residents who were turning to foreign websites to gamble.
The government has started negotiations to collaborate with other firms in setting up that homeland online gambling websites.
Lewenza stated that the only reason casinos were created by the government was to help boost employment in cities suffering such as Windsor and give the government a different source of income.
Many workers are no more working full time in casinos because many gamblers have stopped going to casinos. Lewenza said many workers were only invited just a few times in a week to work even though they have not been sacked.
Lewenza is worried that these online websites will bring further hardships on casino employees and result in the loss of their jobs.
The representative of Duncan, Andrew Chornenky said the Ontario government will map out strategies to increase patronage of both casinos and online gambling websites so both of them will thrive. Customers will therefore use both casinos and internet betting sites when they want to gamble.
Many Ontario residents frequently gamble on foreign internet websites and many gamblers are not prevented from over gambling to dangerous limits. Chornenky said the government was planning on a better alternative for online gambling.
